Each year, Mission students participate in national and international Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) conferences which provide them with an opportunity to learn, listen, collaborate, and problem solve with others of their generation who see the world from another perspective.
Mission Montessori Academy has made a commitment to the philosophies and focus of the Montessori Model United Nations. We, at Mission, feel that our relationship with the MMUN has strengthened our vision of teaching our students to be functioning members of a global community. We are committed to bringing all we learn by our participation back to our community. We believe in action and application.
MMA began participating in the Montessori Model United Nations in the fall of 2011. Mission students have traveled to the New York MMUN conference each March and internationally have traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, France, Germany; Rome, Italy; Santiago, Chile; Beijing and Zhengzhou, China; and Hangzhou and Shanghai, China. At our first conference, students represented the small island nation of Tuvalu. Since representing Tuvalu, students have represented nations in Asia and the Pacific, Eastern and Western Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. In all, our students have represented twenty-one nations.
Mission students have excelled at these conferences and many have gone on to participate in the MMUN Leadership program. Presently, we have twelve former students who have gone through the training and now act as Chairs, co-Chairs and Rapporteurs in committees. Many have gone on to universities and are pursuing careers in global leadership.
In summary, the MMUN program is an opportunity for children to experience the task of building a peaceful world. By participating in MMUN, students will share ideas with students from every continent and problem solve to find solutions to global issues. Each student has found personal success, nurtured friendships and created memories that will last a lifetime. MMUN creates global citizens. By attending MMUN, children will find their voice and their humanity.
